Now days, as what can be generously called an adult, when I hang out with friends and want a quick snack, we head down to the local 7-Eleven in Long Beach (it’s everything you imagine and more) and get their 2 for 2.22 hot dogs. Or sour worms. Depends if I’m heading to the movie theater, or back to my friend’s place. On the one hand, they taste better than you might expect given 20 years of the Simpsons’ Kwik-E-Mart proprietor Apu Nahasapeemapetilon. And that’s not even given the tendency to douse the hot dogs in condiments and/or chili and/or cheese sauce. Personally, I maintain my ketchup/mustard/relish/onion/mayonnaise hot dog condiment load stance.
I know, it’s unhealthy, but I burn it off through exercise. Don’t judge me.
But, when I was a kid, man we had the most awesome snacks. Planter’s cheese balls. Pepsi Fire, and Pepsi Ice.

The preferred beverages of Heat Miser and Snow Miser.
Or, during the summer, the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle popsicles. I first had them on a family vacation in Florida. Great on a hot humid summer day, and you know, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are awesome when you’re ten. They’re turtles and they’re ninjas. The only thing that would have made them better was if they could dance. Oh wait, they got that covered too.

Everyone knows that Donatello was the best turtle though.
Unfortunately, now, as what can be generously called an adult, I’ve found out that they were less than healthy for a growing young boy. Color me shocked. Shocked and appalled.
The list of nine, according to Time, of nine kid foods to avoid. Some of the worst (read my favorite) include Kraft Macaroni and Cheese and Oscar Meyer Lunchables. An unadvised drink is, of course, Sunny Delight. This is even considering the fact that kids prefer it over the purple stuff.
The purple stuff! I know.
Anyway, Time advises a number of other choices that are healthier for kids, or less unhealthy. Stuff like milk for Sunny Delight, Oscar Mayer Lunchables Chicken Dunks for Oscar Mayer Lunchables Mini Tacos, and Uncle Ben’s Brown Whole Grain Rice for Kraft Scooby-Doo! Macaroni & Cheese Dinner.
It’s good advice, especially given the number of non-physical activities that kids have going for them. I’m talking about the Playstation 3, the Facebook, the Twitter, and all that nonsense that didn’t exist when I was a kid. Eating healthy and exercise are importan though.
